Scenes from the UF this week
We started replacing some of the 1990s brass light fixtures, and we ran into this in the powder room:
Lovely rosebud wallpaper. That has been painted over (except that one spot where they just painted around the fixture). And texturized. Luckily, the new light fixture covers it up too so we just left it as is and put the new fixture up. Somehow, I forgot to take a picture and didn't realize it until now.
Then there was this:
Yes, that is a beige light switch with an incorrect white faceplate on top of it. Poor light switch has lived its life without full range of motion. We bought all new faceplates to go on the switches and outlets, but we quickly realized that we'd have to swap out the insides to match too. So my husband got started on that. There are about 50 outlets, and probably 15 switches. He's done 4.
The old stuff. There were 4 different switch faceplates and 3 different outlet faceplates. Ceramic, brass, wood, you name it. They were trying out all the faceplates!
My husband is an electrical engineer, y'all. For real.
I assembled everyone for a group shot.
Now I've started prepping the kitchen cabinets to paint them. This may take a while.
ALL of the outlets in our 1974 house are installed upside down. It's not really a problem very often, but sometimes, with heavy cords like a surge suppressor, they really don't want to be turned upside down. I bought a big contractor box of replacements when we were doing the original remodel 14 years ago, and planned to slowly switch them out myself. But, the copper wire of 1974, or at least of this house, is too large a gauge to fit into the quick connects of 21st century outlets. And, it's really a PITA to try to bend them around the old-school screw connectors. So, they remain upside down today. The details & nuances of houses are always interesting, and too often frustrating!
ReplyDeleteSome of the wires in this house are too large to use the quick connects too, so we have to use the screw-down connectors about half the time. :-/
ReplyDeleteI keep falling behind on the UF updates, because I find myself in an ambivalence loop of sheer terror and inspiration. I'm trying to press on and catch up today, but I am so frightened of kitchen cabinet painting, since that is THE NEXT thing on our agenda.
